Casa Haartman
The artist home Casa Haartman was designed by Turku architect Erik Bryggman (1891-1955) for Axel and Hedvig Haartman. Axel Haartman (1877-1969) was a versatile cultural figure, trained as an artist and active as an art critic, illustrator, advertising designer, journalist, art dealer and director of the Turku Art Museum.
Completed in 1926, Casa Haartman embodies the classicist style of the 1920s, blending Italian influences with elements of Swedish architecture. While architect Erik Bryggman designed the exterior, Axel Haartman personally crafted the interiors and decorative paintings.
The house served as the couple’s home for forty years and remains preserved with its original furnishings, artwork, and artifacts, all viewable through guided tours. Alongside Axel Haartman’s own creations, works by prominent artists such as Fanny Churberg, Victor Westerholm, and Wäinö Aaltonen are also on display. In the summer, the garden becomes a beautiful attraction, with blooming fruit trees, bulb plants, and a succession of flowering perennials.
The Haartmans regarded their home as Axel’s most significant artistic creation and wished for it to be preserved in its original state. From 1970 to 2017, the association Hedvigs Minne upheld this vision. In 2017, Casa Haartman was donated to the Åbo Akademi University Foundation.
Part of the museum’s collection has been digitised and is accessible through the national search service Finna.
